Two years ago the well being and the respect of several local citizens was jeopardized when the Johnson City Police department carried out a sting operation aimed at gay men. A local newspaper responded with a shameful display of those who had fallen victim to the sting. As a result, several individuals lost their jobs and their family relationships. One of those men actually committed suicide.Come to our next meeting, Thursday, August 19th at 7 p.m. at #315 Warf-Pickel at ETSU!
It was blatantly apparent that the civil liberties of these people were being jeopardized. In response, five individuals rallied together to offer their support through education, service, and leadership. They did so by organizing the Tri-Cities chapter of P.F.L.A.G.
Under their guidance, a strong foundation of allies for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community has taken root in the Tri-Cities. At this time, P.F.L.A.G. Tri-Cities has many members and allies who follow us on Facebook and who support one another through meetings, service projects, and advocacy roles. As a result, P.F.L.A.G. Tri-Cities has matured into an invaluable social justice entity for our surrounding area. It offers support and compassion for the well being of all living in a part of the country where many are challenged by sexual diversity.
Now after two years of devoted service, the original founding steering committee is passing the baton on to a new group. In appreciation for their service, we would like to officially acknowledge those who answered the higher call. Kerry Holland, John Mosier, John Shuck, Patricia Robertson, and Bert Allen have generously offered their compassion and their devotion for the respect and justice of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgendered individuals in East TN. We are thankful for the work and for the leadership they have provided. We take this opportunity to offer them our heartfelt gratitude.
